Thievery Corporation Turns It On

On Tuesday night streams of eager music lovers flowed into Malkin Bowl. It was a diverse crowd, the majority styled in common hipster garb. As I walked through the main gate I noticed a slight haze over the audience. At first I thought this was the lingering smoke of many joints ablaze. Once I reached the main area, I found it was dust from the constant activity of foot traffic. Driven by anxious energy and trips to replenish fluids. I made sure to locate a decent spot, and anchored down as quickly as possible.

Within a few minutes my own anxious energy was in tune with those around me. The lights on stage faded ever so slowly. The band casually trotted into position. A roar of excitement erupted from the mob in attendance. It was time to take in some musical mastery.

I have to admit I have very little experience with the group. Sure I have listened to their albums, but I don’t follow them at all. I would consider myself a casual admirer.

Their live act is not about movement and energy, it is about music and mood. They flow around the stage dancing on the waves of their own sound. Everything seems so organic and natural. They meld together multiple genres and create this ambient psych sound that really penetrates you. Slow flowing lead guitar with some Indian sitar and some delectable female vocals had me completely locked in. They are really beautiful to experience live.

Turning around and watching the crowd absorb the sound was astounding. Everyone I could see was smiling and swaying. It really was an experience that brought people together. Something in that music really made people feel part of something. It was magical to say the least.

The one thing I find interesting, is the amount of experimentation this band seems to have. They are constantly bringing different artists and amalgamating with them. It is almost like a symbiotic relationship that leaves both parts bettered by the experience. Over the years artists have left imprints of themselves in the sound fingerprint that is Thievery Corporation. Even if they created new music after their participation, the new creations still seems to carry a certain DNA-of-artists-past.

Experiencing the band live, really pulls all this past experimentation to the forefront. You can really feel all that toiling and tinkering come to life.

I was really impressed with how well this group played live. They were true to what they seem to represent in their recorded material. Every artist in the group was completely enveloped in their performance. They truly are an amazing band.

Overall it was a great evening. The crowd and the artists entered into a reciprocal relationship, feeding off one another, powering on into the night. Thievery Corporation poured on the charisma and brought forth one hell of a show.
