Nowadays their are literally dozens of crossover artists, jumping from genre to genre. It is not uncommon to see an actor, become a musician, then become some sort of artist. But if you were to go back to the mid-nineties this was not a very common occurrence. Sure you had celebrities making cameos into outside genres, but they never solidified these moves as careers. They were temporary.
Then comes Ice Cube. He took the rap world by storm with N.W.A. and then prospered with his own solo career for the better part of two decades. Right smack-dab in the middle of this he was drafted into the acting scene. Appearing in such films as Boyz n the Hood, Higher Learning and the memorable Friday, which he not only starred in, but wrote and produces as well. From that moment on he became a full fledged actor/musician and he has worn that badge with honor.
If you take a look through his back catalog of hits you are almost overwhelmed by the sheer volume. His production seems to have never really let up. Be it the huge earlier albums in 1991′s Death Certificate or 1992′s The Predator, which yielded such landmark songs as Steady Mobbin or Check Yo Self. or 2008′s Raw Footage, which brought us Gangsta Rap Made Me Do It, his creativity and grit have kept him relevant all these years.
Every vehicle with any semblance of a kick ass system, that really wants to showcase the depth of bass they are trucking around in their trunk, has pumped out Can You Bounce or We Be Clubbin. Ice Cube’s anthemic approach to music, has meant that his songs end up being just that, anthems. His hard-ass glare, his street credit and his hard-as-shit attitude, have really helped to cement him as a mainstay in music.
The greatest part about this legend, is that he is hitting the Commodore Ballroom on April 11th – more info. You will be able to step into this infamous venue and bare witness to greatness taking place. This will surely be an epic night, and I encourage all out there to seek tickets. Ice Cube will have the place so thick with green smoke, you can’t help but have an amazing time.
