Ween Is Bringing The Music

In a little over a month, a seriously amazing force will be dropping into Vancouver; Ween. On January 24th, they will be blessing the masses with their original and cult followed musical stylings. With the variant vocals of both Dean Ween and Gene Ween, you are always in for a treat.

It wasn’t even that long ago that I sat before my computer and heard my first Ween song. In the past I had heard many Ween songs, but I mean the first time I really “heard” them, and listened to the lyrics. I mean look at the lyrics to Mister Richard Smoker, Mister Richard smoker/you’re a poopey poker/chardonnay & cocaine in the spa/cigarettes and coffee breath/little boys on crystal meth – funny truths, a group just having fun. The best part is nothing is off limits and most of the time its nothing but pure hilarity.

Although I am not an uber fan boy, I can really appreciate this group. They are the original Flight Of The Conchords, and they formed in 1984. Sorry, Bret and Jemaine you were about 14 years to late to be trendsetters. Ween is one of those groups you just get, there is no artsy hipster, i’m-ironic-for-liking-this thought required, they are just plain awesome. The other great aspect that sets them apart is their ability to span so many genres. At times they can be full of reggae and near funk, and then others they can turn to a more 60s pop sound, without even missing a beat. One of the greatest groups by far.

This is a group that refuses to be pigeonholed and plays what they want, when they want. And if all that wasn’t enough, if you aren’t already fighting to find a computer to hear this group play, their is more. They play with true piss and vinegar live, they are a fan driven band and they are a huge drive in the venue specific poster game. At almost every show they sell prints, which displays the date and venue of that specific show, this is a true sign of a band that loves their fans. In fact taking a quick jump over to my favorite art site (expressobeans.com) it looks like Ween has around 350 separate posters, that’s up there with Pearl Jam and The White Stripes. These guys are up there with the Grateful Dead, as a true fan band.

The bottom line is Ween is about having a good time, they will always put on a good show because they are having fun and its hard not to produce something amazing when you love every second of what you do. If you are looking to see this band live, well then Vancouver you are in luck, they are coming here on January 24th, playing at the Queen Elizabeth Theater (BUY TICKETS). I strongly urge everyone out there to buy tickets to this show, you will not be disappointed.
