A sweltering day in our beautiful city was capped off with an intimate show at Venue on Granville. Autolux, L.A. based rockers, and their openers This Will Destroy You, swept the crowd away. With a very sparse turnout and a very passionate group of musicians, it made for a fantastic show.
Starting the night was This Will Destroy You, a post-rock instrumental group from San Marcos. They come across like Boris, with a swelling wall of sound and organic noise. The onlookers in the house were mesmerized; no conversations took place, just captivated stares. There sound is like that of a jam session on acid, growing with every piece. No words to accompany, but the emotion and passion erupts from every chord. They are a band to watch.
Stepping from the shadows, Autolux could be seen filtering to the stage to setup their own instruments. No roadies for this group yet. As the lights faded black and the house music dampened, the trio again took the stage. With no introduction or useless banter they lept into a sweet set of pure rock. The drummer, Carla, swung a poetic spastic beat for the group. Greg, on guitar, soulfully danced with his guitar, and made it sing perfection. Eugene, the lead singer on bass, pounded through his set, with a rough heart. It was an amazing display.
The small crowd of maybe 120 people were swinging with the rhythm. During a lull in between songs, one enthusiast yells “I wanna have your abortion” to Eugene. To which he pauses then replies “Maybe we will let that one dry out a bit”. The whole show had a great vibe and the attendees were soaking it up proudly.
With the minimalist setup of Venue, it added a certain beautiful ambiance to the set. A feeling like being their at the start of something amazing. A dark lit room with three dedicated and talented musicians, uncovering their mastery, peeling back each layer and finding themselves every time they played a note. Although not a new band by any means, their musical growth is easy to see.
Autolux should be on everyone’s must watch list. They are a true rock band with a truly unique yet massively palatable sound. With their infusion of low-fi and post-punk components, they make for great listening. Their live performance solidified the previous assumptions, they are a true musical force.
